Biography
Andonis Foniadakis grew up in Lerepetra, in the south of Crete, Greece. He began his dance training with Niki Papadaki at the dance school in his hometown. From 1990 to 1992, he studied at the Athens National Dance School. Before graduating, he received the prestigious Maria Callas Scholarship to continue his studies at the Ruda Béjart School in Lausanne, Switzerland, until 1994.
As a dancer, he has collaborated with the Béjart Ballet Lausanne (1994-1996) under the direction of Maurice Béjart, the Lyon Opera Ballet (1996-2002) under the direction of Yorgos Loukos, Saburo Teshigawara/Karas Co. (2004) under the direction of Saburo Teshigawara, as well as with his own company, “Apotosoma-Andonis Foniadakis.” During his years as a professional dancer, he had the opportunity to work with numerous choreographers, including: Maguy Marin, Jiří Kylián, William Forsythe, Dominique Boivin, Nacho Duato, Mats Ek, Maurice Béjart, Ohad Naharin, Frédéric Flamand, Bill T. Jones, Hervé Robbe, Tero Saarinen, Lionel Hoche, Joachim Schlomer, John Jasperse, Saburo Teshigawara, and others.
As a choreographer, Andonis has collaborated with the Geneva Ballet (Switzerland), the Royal New Zealand Ballet, the Lyon Opera Ballet (France), the Bern Ballet (Switzerland), the Ballet de Lorraine (France), the Gauthier Dance Company (Germany), Ballets Jazz Montréal (Canada), Martha Graham Dance Company (USA), Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet (USA), Aterballeto (Italy), the Ballet du Rhin (France), the Sydney Dance Company (Australia), the Florence Ballet (Italy), the National Dance Company of Wales (UK), Dansgroep Amsterdam (Netherlands), Cia Sociedade Masculina (Brazil), Bale da Cidade of São Paulo (Brazil), Helsinki Dance Company (Finland), the Greek National Ballet, the National Theatre of Northern Greece (Greece), the National Theatre in Greece, Codarts (Netherlands), the Benjamin Millepied Dance Company (USA), and the Washington Ballet. (United States), Béjart Ballet Lausanne (Switzerland), Ballet Junior de Genève (Switzerland), Hellenic Dance Company (Greece), Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon (France), Copenhagen International Dance Festival (Denmark).
He was the director of the Greek National Ballet for the 2016-2017 season and curated the programs for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. He is a resident choreographer with the Greek National Ballet.
Foniadakis has been commissioned to choreograph three operas: Castor et Pollux at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Les Boreades by Rameau Grame at the Opéra National du Rhin in Lyon, and Il Canto de la Pelle by Claudio Ambrosini.
He collaborated as coordinator on the film NOAH by Darren Aronofsky. In 2012, he received the Danza and Danza Award for "Best Choreographer of the Year 2012" in Italy for his creation of Les Noces in Maggio Danza for the Florence Ballet.
He also worked with the Palais de Tokyo as principal choreographer for the Prec(ar)ious Collectives exhibition, which took place in Athens, Greece, in conjunction with Documenta 14 in 2017.
In addition to creating and performing, Foniadakis teaches at various seminars based on his technical work. He has taught at the National Dance School of Greece, DAN.C.CE studios and Baile de Barrio in Athens, DOCK11 in Berlin, the Conservatoire National de Danse and Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon in France, Dansgroep in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Henny Jurriens.
