Biography

Born in Russia, Yosmell Calderon graduated from the Compañía Nacional de Danza (CND) in Havana in 2005 as a dancer and teacher of contemporary and folk dance, and from the University of the Arts of Cuba (Instituto Superior de Arte - ISA) in 2014. He has collaborated with leading figures in the dance world, including Rafael Bonachela, Mats Ek, Itzik Galili, Carlos Acosta Jr., Jan Linkens, Juan Cruz, and Ana Laguna. He was the principal dancer of Danza Contemporanea de Pal Frenak Compagnie and has performed in more than 22 works by Cuban and international choreographers, presented in major theaters and festivals worldwide.

He also choreographs for the primary level at the Ballet School of the Havana International Ballet Festival, and, drawing on his experience in Olympic gymnastics, he also creates choreography for circus performances. He joined Ballets Jazz Montréal in July 2016 and became a principal artist in 2019.
