Dance Me is an exclusive new creation inspired by the rich and profound work of the Montreal poet, artist and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. This unique presentation takes the five seasons as the premise for the cycles of existence. The five cycles consist of a series of tableaux that evoke different feelings and states of mind associated with the seasons and natural elements. References to specific Montreal locations mentioned in Cohen’s work will be illustrated impressionistically by video or multimedia projections.
Recurrent universal themes evoked by the artist will be expressed in a selection of songs, from the quest for freedom to love, religion and spirituality; from poetry to women, society, artificial utopias, inspiration and creation, etc.
To pay tribute to this iconic figure, artistic director Louis Robitaille is working with three internationally renowned choreographers: Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Andonis Foniadakis and Ihsan Rustem. Their distinctive styles and personalities will complement each other in the creation of this piece as they work with the 14 BJM dance artists.
The company has been granted exclusive dance rights for five years by the Cohen team, and by Sony ATV Music Publishing, Sony Music Entertainment Canada and Old Ideas LLC.
This new dance work had its world première at Place des Arts presented by Danse Danse from December 5 to 9, 2017, and as part of the official program of Montreal’s 375th anniversary celebrations.
BJM would like to thank Ms. Marjorie Bronfman for the precious support given to the creation of the show.
Dance Me has been supported by CCOV – Centre de Création O Vertigo.
